“I am here because I am a queer Latina. I came out when I was 14 years old to my family, and I have been out ever since so I know what it’s like to be afraid of what people might do to you when they find out that you’re a queer. But I never expected something like this (the shooting) to happen to people,” said Laura Esquivel, an LGBTQ activist who attended the vigil at Lafayette Park, Washington, D.C.
